Iron(II) bromide is used as an intermediate in the synthesis porphryins. It is also used as weak reducing agents. It is used as precursor for the preparation of [(C₂H₅)₄N]₂FeBr₄ by reacting with tetraethylammonium bromide. It is also involved in the synthesis of iron pyrite nanocrystals and nanocrystalline thin films.

Hygroscopic. Keep the container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Incompatible with alkali metals like potassium and sodium, and sodium oxides.
